Navies use the nautical mile because it's tied directly to the geometry of the Earth and to navigation. Defined as exactly 1,852 meters, it closely corresponds to one minute of latitude (1/60 of one degree) along the Earth's surface.

Unlike several other navies, the U.S. Navy has forbidden regular alcohol consumption on ships since General Order 99 of 1914. Exceptions include medicinal, religious, and if a ship has been at sea continuously for 45 days or more, the Captain is authorized to distribute up to two beers per sailor. Lengthy at-sea periods are not uncommon during wartime and periods of heightened regional tensions (Cold War included). So if a sailor shares a story about their six pack deployment (125+ days at sea), it's probably worth listening to.

 Mariners of all kinds, from commercial fishermen to military sailors, refer to the toilet as the "head." This dates back to early sailing vessels where the toilet was located at the bow (the head of the ship) where special slots in the floor took advantage of the slicing through the waves to wash the area. With the introduction of piping on modern ships, the term stuck so that even if the toilet is far astern (the back of the ship), you still ask the lido deck bartender on the cruise ship "These margaritas are going right through me. Where's the nearest head?"
